RAISE Hot Toddy and Egg Nogg >> Winter is just around the corner and what could be better than a hot mug Luca Cordiglieri, president of the UK Bartender’s Guild of mulled wine to warm you up. Mulled wine is a classic but there are also lots of other drinks such as Hot Toddy and Egg Nogg that can banish the cold during the winter months. Offering a good selection of warm drinks can help increase sales during the Christmas period. You can have a lot of fun with mulled wine and substitute the wine with sweet vermouth, port or different type of wines. When it comes to Hot Toddy, the classic recipe is whisky, honey, lemon juice, sugar and hot water. But you can mix it up a bit by substituting the whisky with rum, cognac, armagnac or even gin! In place of the sugar, different flavoured syrups like hazelnut, almond or pear and cinnamon can be used to add extra layers of flavour. What about the hot water? You could use a juice or a tea to add another dimension. When it comes to Egg Nog, the traditional recipe is milk, sugar, eggs and flavourings. You can add brandy, rum or bourbon to it. Again you can create different versions by adding vanilla, star anise, cinnamon, cloves, hazelnut or chocolate - or why not try some wines like Marsala from Italy? I leave you with a recipe for a mulled wine: RAISE THE BAR Mulled Wine Serves 6 • 450 ml Merlot or a red wine of your choice • 200 ml Cranberry juice • 60 ml Sloe Gin • 60 ml Vanilla Syrup • 6 Cinnamon Stick • 8 Cloves • 4 Star Anise • Nutmeg • Orange Zest Bring all ingredients to the boil then simmer for 4-5 minutes. Pour it in different glasses, spray with the orange zest and sprinkle nutmeg on it. Enjoy it. You can have a lot of fun with mulled wine and substitute the wine...
